The Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 was the most significant change in the organization of the US commercial airline industry ever since its development. Before the act, the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) had regulatory power on routes, fares, and entry, which hindered competition (Nataraja et al., 2024). Consequent to deregulation, airlines were allowed to fix fares and select routes, and competition surged, which had many benefits, such as low fares and greater route service.

Pros of Airline Deregulation

The main benefit of airline deregulation is a decrease in the prices of airline tickets prices. As a direct result of the unfettered liberalization of airlines, when they were allowed free rein to compete, more often than not, the costs came down in a way that air travel became accessible to a far greater proportion of the population than it was before (de Mattos et al., 2021). This price competition made flying more accessible to more people than it used to be because traveling was a preserve of the rich.

Deregulation also intensified competitive forces in airline industries. Bills on routes and fares were lifted, implying that airlines could be eased in and out of the market unfettered. This led to a positive chain effect, forcing the airlines to cultivate customer loyalty strategies to keep their passengers. Thus, passengers received improved service offers, and new airlines, such as LCCs, offered new solutions to address various demands.

Also, deregulation brought new route opportunities, and it especially favored the state, which has fewer airline routes than densely populated regions. The new routes also helped enhance the travel facilities for passengers in other provincial cities while at the same time boosting tourism in these locations (de Mattos et al., 2021). However, the industry has generally increased tremendously after the deregulation, and the operational efficiencies have increased profitability and economy of scale that could not have been incurred in a deregulated environment.

Cons of Airline Deregulation

Nonetheless, airline deregulation has entailed several drawbacks. However, A major disadvantage has been realized in terms of high levels of industry consolidation brought by mergers to foster high competitiveness among airlines (Chuang, 2023). This trend has brought consolidation of the number of carriers on specific routes that, at times, lead to high fares and limited choices in the market for the consumer. These have resulted in monopoly-like situations where certain markets are almost monopolistic, making the possibility of monopolistic pricing and consumer exploitation likely.

The other drawback of this model is its consequences for service quality in less significant or less profitable segments. However, the fact is that since the airlines try to work on profitable routes for themselves, some small communities have been left with few or no suppliers at all (Chuang, 2023). This has led to limited availability, contrary to the objective of opening travel accessibility for people in these zones. In addition, deregulation made employment unpredictable since airlines exploited any chance to reduce the costs of their operations by denying employees better working terms and conditions, which ignited dissatisfaction and, hence, strikes.

Is Deregulation Necessary?

The need for further deregulation might be questionable. On one end, deregulation has provided the intended benefits in dem and for fares and thus air travel, and it is suitable for consumers and industry (Nataraja et al., 2024). However, situations where monopolistic tendencies appear, and services to smaller communities are not so expansive may be seen as directions where some extra regulation might be helpful.
