Instructions: Imagine you randomly assign participants to an IV Task where they complete either an easy anagram solving task (“Please rearrange the letters BAT to form a new word”. This is very easy, as it can be rearranged to TAB) or an impossible to solve hard anagram task (“Please rearrange the letters ORANGE to form a new word”. This task this cannot actually be done!). You then ask all participants to solve a second anagram by rearranging CINERAMA to form a new word. This, of course, is difficult, but it can be rearranged to AMERICAN. Based on the theory of learned helplessness (in which prior failures make it less likely for people to try hard on future tasks), you believe those given an easy first anagram to solve (“TAB”) will solve the anagram “CINERAMA”. However, those who get the hard first anagram (“ORANGE”) will not solve the anagram “CINERAMA”.
