For this OWA, you’re going to be applying the terminologies that we’ve been using in class to talk intelligently about “Gutted,” by Vievee Francis. In about 400 words, I’d like you to make an argument about the way the poem depicts the relationship between humanity and the environment. I would like to see you be able to toggle between macro and the micro levels, talking about the overall effect of the poem (especially as regards your impression of the human-environment relationship) as well as particular moments in the text where the poet uses particular poetic elements in service of this overall effect. In other words, I want you to show me you can talk about what a poem is saying, both broadly and specifically, by using examples from the text, and the vocabulary (the diction, one might say) we’ve been practicing in class.
