End your paper with an overall assessment of the child’s progress in the particular domain.
Write 2 hour observation report on infant from age group of birth to 36 month. Only one child should be observed and write only physical and motor development. I have attached rubric. Please go through that below writing.
Observation Report Instructions & Rubric
The goals of these reports are to give you: (1) an opportunity to study a developmental topic in
more depth, (2) an opportunity to observe development in action, and (3) practice synthesizing
and applying content learned in class to development in a real life setting.
Instructions: Observe an infant or toddler (for at least 2 hours for each Observation Report)
between the ages of birth and 36 months of age. You should observe only one child for the first 3
reports, and at least two children for the final report (on peer relationships). You will do this four
times throughout the semester (see due dates on syllabus). In each report, you will focus on only
ONE developmental domain:
Observation #1: Physical/Motor Development
Observation #2: Cognitive AND/OR Emotional Development AND/OR Attachment
Observation #3: Social AND/OR Language Development
Observation #4: Peer Relationships
The following information should be included in each report:
1. Child’s Age (in months) and Gender 2. Observations of development in the assigned domain(s)
a. Include several descriptions of what the child does, says, etc., that are relevant to the domain you are observing.
3. Assessment/evaluation of the child’s developmental progress in the assigned domain(s)
a. Based on your observations and information from Fogel, assess and evaluate the child’s developmental progress. Connect your observations to information on
typical development from the text, and formulate an educated opinion on how the
child is progressing. Use your observations and information from the text to
support your opinion.
b. End your paper with an overall assessment of the child’s progress in the particular domain.
4. References a. A reference for Fogel must be included. b. You are allowed to consult other scholarly sources, but this is not required. If you
do use additional sources, they must be included on your References page.
5. Objective observation notes a. These must be typed and included after your References page. They can be in
your preferred notes format (e.g., bullet points, outline, etc.).
b. Points will be deducted if notes are not sufficient enough to indicate a 2-hour long observation was completed.
Requirements:
Minimum 500 words, NOT including observation notes
APA 6th Edition Formatting (including title page, running head, etc. No abstract required.)
1” margins
12 point Times New Roman
Double-Spaced
Tips
1. You are heavily encouraged to visit the Write Site. The TWU Write Site provides individualized and group face-to-face writing instruction, help at any stage of the writing
process, as well as online writing instruction through the Online Writing Lab (OWL).
Make an appointment to visit them in person or online! https://twu.edu/write-site/
2. If you look at the rubric, you will notice that your observation and your assessment are weighted equally—that is, each part is worth 35 points. This means that you should
devote equal amounts of space to both. Do not devote 75% of your paper to your
observations and only 25% to your assessment. You will not do well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I observe the same child for each observation report?
A: Absolutely. However, all requirements must be still be met (e.g., between 0 to 36 months; if
the child ages out in the course of the semester, you need to find another child).
Q: Can I observe a child I am related to/babysit/etc.?
A: Yes.
Q: If I am observing a child I do not know, can I make my best guess at their age?
A: Yes. However, if the situation allows, ask a parent or caregiver if they would mind sharing
their child’s age.
Q: OBSERVATION #4 ONLY The child I usually observe does not have any peers. Can I
still write my peer report on them?
A: No. You need to find at least two children who are reasonably close in age.
Q: OBSERVATION #4 ONLY Can I observe siblings for my peer report?
A: No. You need to find at least two children who are reasonably close in age.
Q: Can I use quotes?
A: ONLY if you absolutely must and only if you couldn’t possibly put the quote into your own
words. Quoting appropriately and effectively is fine. See links/documents on Blackboard
regarding quoting effectively. NO STAND-ALONE QUOTES ALLOWED (e.g., a sentence
made up entirely of quoted content). Stand-alone quotes do not count toward your overall
word count. Exceptionally poorly integrated quotes also count as stand-alone quotes. For
example: “According to Fogel, ‘XYZ’” and “The textbook says: ‘XYZ.’” Stand-alone quotes
detract from the quality of your writing. I don’t want to re-read the textbook in your paper. I want
to read what YOU think about what the textbook says!
