Considering purpose, tone and audience

Choose an news article from recent events and evaluate the author’s purpose, audience, and tone.

Guidelines: Document your source in MLA format. Include an active link to your source.

Your source must come from an established news source (not a blog), and encourage you all to look at sources with which you might be unfamiliar. For instance, if you regularly listen to/read the Washington Post, you might look at and analyze Fox News (and vice versa). I would also encourage you to look at a variety of news sources reporting on the same issue/event before you choose which you will use for this assignment.

Note: As you craft your response, consider your own tone in how you are discussing the piece. Are you maintaining a fair, objective one? Is it difficult to do so (especially if you have chosen a source that might vary from your own point of view?)

Be as specific as possible in your responses to each of the following questions:

1. What is the author’s purpose? How do you know?

2. What are the readers’ probable ages, sex, and educational levels/how do you know?

3. What are the readers’ likely political_ religious, and other beliefs?

4. How do/may these beliefs influence their attitudes and actions in response to the piece?

5. What interests and needs (likely) motivate audience?

6. What biases might readers have? What values does the author share with readers that will help communicate with them?

7. What tone has the author adopted, and why? See if you can pinpoint the tone, citing examples in word choice and approach.

8.) What tone has the author adored, and why? See if you can pinpoint the tone, citing examples in word choice and approach.

Answer all question in you response as possible.
