3 Questions about The Columbian Exchange – Population and Disease

  1. Using the lecture and the Crosby and Richards readings, reflect on the following: A variety of factors contributed to European colonization of the ‘New World,’ how dominant a factor do you consider the ‘biological’ impact of human migration and the introduction of microbes and pathogens (as opposed to guns, for example)?
  2. What can we learn from Table 4 Origins of Peoples in the New World? Look especially at the Caribbean countries, but also at Canada. How does the Columbian exchange explain these numbers? What are the percentages of indigenous peoples?
  3. What is the environmental impact of disease and migration?
