Background: Evaluating rhetorical choices found in journal articles is a great way to think critically about choices you can make as an undergraduate writer in the disciplines. To complete this process, you must pay careful attention to choices an article’s author has made; evaluate whether important choices from the article are effective for the article’s rhetorical situation; decide whether choices you’ve noticed while reading are appropriate for your own writing tasks. This assignment takes you through this process, asking you first to evaluate whether choices you have found in a journal article are effective for the article’s rhetorical situation and then to predict whether those choices may be appropriate for undergraduate writing situations in your field.

  • Analyze the article’s rhetorical situation as well as its choices with structure, reference, language, and other convention categories
  • Select a recurring choice that seems important to the article
  • Write a rough draft that evaluates that choice
  • Revise your draft based on feedback from peers and the instructor
