China became the first known market society around 1,000 CE. The process was formed over a long period and rested on technological, financial, and administrative innovations together with diplomatic initiatives. At the core of that progress was to be found a renewed interest on the teachings of Confucius. Officially, the Chinese State encouraged this interest as it promoted individualism; much like Protestantism later did in Europe. (500 words +/-50)
