Discussion Assignment

Hi,

This is a discussion assignment It has to be 200 or more words. Instructions are written down.

This week you will educate your fellow students about the form of literary theory you are interested in and are beginning to master!

Although we’ve all browsed links about various forms of literary criticism (Psychoanalytic, Feminism, etc), it’s our task to pick one we are most interested in and really get familiar with it.Teach the class about that perspective. What does it mean to analyze a text from that perspective? What underlying beliefs does that form of literary theory adopt? What elements of text do you look for when reading a work of fiction from that perspective?

Then, discuss what short story it might pair well with, and what graphic novel you plan to read/have started reading.

  • To do this, you may want to include in-text citations (we don’t need works cited pages for this) of the websites that taught you the most about that form of literary analysis. Citing your work helps you ground your summary into something specific and avoid plagiarism.
  • Again, remember you’re trying to educate people in the class who aren’t as familiar with your chosen form of literary theory, so keep your language as simple and unique as possible.
  • Write a total of two developed paragraphs.

***CHOOSING THE GRAPHIC NOVEL***

I am giving you a choice between THREE graphic novels. Read about all three and pick the one that seems most interesting to you.

Fun Home , by Allison Bechdel, a coming-of-age story about a young gay woman who grew up living in her father’s funeral home. She has to deal with her closeted father’s suicide as she transitions to college. This book is rad. Adult themes: sexuality.

Persepolis: Story of a Childhood, by Marjane Satrapi, is another coming-of-age story about a 12-year-old in Iran who survives the overthrow of the Shah and the new fundamentalist regime. This book is fantastic. Adult themes: some torture, war stuff.
