Compare and contrast

For this assignment, you will write a 3–4 page (not including Works Cited) analytical paper on any two of the primary texts assigned,including at least one text assigned (Bless Me Ultima, Sula, So Long, See You Tomorrow, In Country). The focus should be primarily on comparing and contrasting the characterization of the rural in the two texts. At this point in the course, we’ve concluded that there is no single, monolithic definition of rural, but rather many different, regional rurals, defined largely by time, place, and individual culture. However, these rurals often share central characteristics. So, write a paper that explores the ways in which the different rurals in the two texts are unique from each other, but also the ways in which they share common ideas, practices, and/or cultural touchstones. Like Essay 1, this assignment is based on close reading, and should offer clear support from you chosen texts as well as thoughtful consideration/explanation of that support. You should not simply repackage ideas explored in class, but build on those discussions and take your analysis further.

The paper should adhere to MLA format guidelines, and be submitted to the appropriate dropbox on the course Blackboard page on the due date provided.

The essay will be evaluated on the following criteria: effective presentation of thesis, selection of supporting passages/details, arrangement of information, writing style, and technical matters.
