How does The Lightining Thief by Rick Riordan fit the elements of Fantasy books?

Evaluating Modern Fantasy

Guidelines pg. 155

Seven Elements of Fantasy – Below are the seven basic elements of fantasy and a description of each. After reading your chosen book, use that information to fill in the blanks from each of the seven elements. If your book does not have one of the elements, please list that as well. Each answer needs to be at least 4 sentences.

1.Magic

Magic is the most basic element of fantasy. Magic is that in which charms, spells or rituals are used in order to produce a supernatural event. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2.Otherworlds

Otherworlds are an imaginative creation by the author of a place that is nothing like earth. It is a completely imagined world where anything can happen and is only limited by the author’s imagination. One thing I respect the most about fantasy writers is their ability to create from scratch an entirely imagined world where unreal things happen. The author has two choices when introducing an imaginary world to the reader. He or she can begin the book by locating all characters in this imagined world and never refer to what we know as the real world. The characters can also have the ability to jump between two worlds. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3.Universal Themes

Universal themes are a must-have in a fantasy story. The most basic of these is good versus evil. There’s always a good guy trying to fight for what is right against the powerful force of a bad guy. A great example of good vs. evil is A Wrinkle in Time. Other themes include love (Pinocchio), friendship (Charlotte’s Web) and perseverance in the face of danger (Lord of the Rings). __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4.Heroism

Heroism is something we all love. We love to see heroes save the day and become victorious over evil. Many times the heroes are ordinary people in difficult circumstances. They themselves don’t know of their powers or abilities until they are called upon to perform heroic feats. It is that humble strength that we love to see. Some characters are guided by a larger, more powerful force.

5.Special Character Types

Special character types are abundant in fantasies. Some examples are fairies, giants, ogres, dragons, witches, unicorns and centaurs. We love these characters because they are so different from what we find in our daily lives. However, a good author can shape the character in such a way that the reader has no problem believing that such a being could exist.

6.Talking Animals

The use of talking animals or anthropomorphism in fantasy stories can be used for several purposes. Sometimes the animals can talk to humans, as in James in the Giant Peach or The Chronicles of Narnia. Then sometimes the animals only talk amongst each other and are incapable of talking with humans, as in Charlotte’s Web, Redwall or Rabbit Hill. The need and use for communication is prevalent in both types. Here we can also mention the use of talking toys, as in The Velveteen Rabbit or The Indian in the Cupboard.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

7.Fantastic Objects

Fantastic objects help the characters perform their task. Many times these objects become almost a character in themselves. Where would Dorothy be without her slippers, Harry without his wand or Tinkerbelle without her dust? Many times characters need such an object to make themselves complete.

Argument Mapping Essay

As we have discussed in class, there are two methods for analyzing texts: analyzing for content and analyzing for structure. In this essay, you will analyze one of these articles on the basis of its structure:

· Robert Reich (“Why the Rich are Getting Richer, and the Poor, Poorer”)

· Andrew Carnegie (“The Gospel of Wealth”)

· Judith Butler (From Undoing Gender)

· Germaine Greer (“Masculinity”)

While it is important to know the main ideas each author puts forward, the focus of this essay is more rhetorical in nature and less content-based.

When we speak about doing a rhetorical analysis, the content of a paper in this style should be concerned with analyzing how certain authors are making their arguments and not just summarizing what they are arguing. When we try to map an argument, the goal is to categorize the types of claims an author makes according to the elements contained within a central model. To accomplish this aim, you will want to focus on the concepts presented in Chs. 8 – 10 of the Barnet et al. text. Here are the three models you can choose from:

· Toulmin

· Rogerian

· As they Barnet et al. call it “The Logician’s view: Induction, Deduction and Fallacies”

Remember these important notes as you write for this prompt:

· The goal of this essay is to characterize your chosen essay as an example (whether effective or ineffective) of ONE of these types of arguments. Saying “It’s effective because it integrates multiple styles” and doing a general overview of all three types is NOT the goal of this assignment. Rather, you want to talk about how the argument type is effective or ineffective for the author’s purpose.

· Rhetoric is largely concerned with the effectiveness of arguments, so as you choose areas of the texts for analysis, remember that you always want to keep in mind the effect of these argumentative tactics on an audience or audience(s).

· You should also analyze how your chosen author integrates certain literary and rhetorical devices (metaphor, allusion, ethos, pathos, logos, rhetorical situation concerns as expressed in Bitzer’s model, syllogism, etc.) to make his or her claims more persuasive to the audience(s) they seek to influence.

· If you choose the Toulmin model, you can include an argument mapping flow chart like the one on Canvas and the one we completed in class as a part of your analysis.

The following are MANDATORY guidelines. Not following any one of them will lose you 5 pts.:

· 12 pt. Arial or Helvetica font ONLY

· 1 in. margins on all borders; double spaced

· Blackboard submission due by 11:59 PM on July 3rd

· For quoted material, observe MLA in-text citation rules

· Minimum 4 outside sources. You do not need to cite the Barnet et al. text in your Works cited page, but you will have to do so when quoting chapters in the text of the essay. The Barnet et al. text counts as an outside source.

· Length: 5-7 full pgs.

gaming, signage, interactivity, icons, web-based, smart phone based

Forum to include “found” examples of digital art in the world of experience. Look for gaming, signage, interactivity, icons, web-based, smart phone based, etc. Grab and include examples of found digital art in a narrated presentation (PPTX is fine). Many of you have excelled at producing short videos with edited segments, soundtrack, really rich presentations such as Powerpoint, or some other format you may wish to use to get “creative”. Digital art is all around us – take a field trip or search in the virtual world…but try to select and “curate” exemplars – the ‘best of’. Include a short narrative on each found piece. Find and prepare/submit a report on at least 7-8 outstanding examples of how digital art is in our everyday experience. Please include 1-2 paragraphs reacting to the aesthetics of the piece and critique it as you would a piece of conventional art. Please review the note on subject matter…it will help you curate between personal photo album pieces and those desirable for the course.

Industrial Revolution

This lesson will explore the emergence of what 19th century Europeans considered to be a “scientific” understanding of race and racial hierarchy. Despite claims of objectivity, this “science” was informed primarily by the cultural assumptions produced through the experience of European imperial projects in the Americas, Asia, Oceania, and Africa. BBC Four’s “Episode 2: Fatal Impacts” uncovers the crimes of colonial expansion in Oceania, Africa, and Asia, and the ways in the idea of race underscored colonial decision-making. It also charts the legacies of Social Darwinism on the domestic and imperial policies of Britain, the United States, and Germany.

Step One:

Watch the documentary, “The Healing Wall” (56 minutes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-082gadmDw

Visit the 9/11 Memorial Website online

http://www.911memorial.org

Step Two: Read the following article, “Stones and Bones: Visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum,” by Adam Copnick.

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/07/07/stones-and-bones

Step Three: Answer the following seven questions. The first question is based on the documentary and is worth two points. The other six questions are based on the article and are worth six points total (one point each).

Provide a detailed summary of the comments by at least four participants in the documentary on the visual design of the Vietnam Memorial. Your answer must include at least 400 words total. Please include the names and the positions of the commentators you selected from the documentary.

Example: Bob Sonderman, (Director, M. R. C. E. National Park Service): Sonderman discusses the later additions to the original design by Maya Lin: first, the three soldiers reminiscent of Iwo Jima, then the more dramatic woman memorial, featuring a woman holding a young solider and looking at a helicopter. Then, a flagpole and an honor roll. He considers the additions not a distraction, but an enhancement because “it satisfied everyone’s need.” He also speaks highly of the original design, with its undulating landscaping design, to be “pretty evocative.” (87 words)

Copnick uses the words “contradictions” and “contradictory” repeatedly in his essay. What are some of the visual contradictions that he identifies at the site of 9/11 Memorial?

Copnick describes the 9/11 Memorial as “chasms” and “two huge sinks.” Compare his description to the description you find at the 9/11Memorial official website. Which of the two descriptions do you agree with and why?

How does Copnick criticize the political correctness in the visual representation inside the 911 Museum?

Copnick identifies some deep-seated problems with American design of memorial sites by comparing them to historical memorials in Europe. Do you agree with his opinion? Why or why not? Explain.

How does Copnick describe the Civil War memorials in the South, in particular, its visual style and the political controversy involved? Explain.

Copnick hails Maya Lin’s 1982 design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as “the greatest of modern American memorials.” He also considers “statue of a trio of soldiers” that were added to the original Vietnam Memorial at last minute “ugly and now overlooked.” Do you agree with his assessment? Explain.
