Risk Factors

Application: Risk Factors and Coping Skills for Juvenile Victims

Many behaviors can increase an individual’s risk of victimization. For example, if you leave your car doors unlocked, you might become a victim of burglary. The act of leaving your car unlocked does not mean you were responsible for or to blame for the burglary, but it is a behavior that increased the likeliness of the burglary. This also applies to juvenile victims. Many behaviors can increase juveniles’ risk of victimization. Disaffected (rebellious) youth often challenge authorities and disobey rules. The behaviors these youths demonstrate can increase the likelihood of them becoming juvenile victims. Once victimized, it is important for juveniles to have the skills necessary to overcome victimization.

For this Assignment, you consider behaviors of disaffected youth that might increase the likelihood of juvenile victimization. Also, you consider the impact of resilience and coping skills on overcoming juvenile victimization.

The Assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Describe two behaviors that may be demonstrated by disaffected youth, and explain how each might increase the likelihood that the youth become juvenile victims.
  • Explain how the use of resilience and coping skills may help a juvenile victim overcome victimization.
  • Explain why some juvenile victims may grow up to be more adjusted than others.

By Day 7, submit your Assignment.

Content Review

  1. The “Building on Theory” section in your course text (Berger, 2016, p. 371) 384 summarizes a very important aspect of children’s cognitive development including the ability to control and regulate the flow of information, In your own words, define the term metacognition. Then, explain why this skill is integral to children’s future cognitive development including success in school and in life.
  2. The course text states that ,“Experiences in middle childhood can sustain, magnify, or reverse the advantages or disadvantages that children acquire in the preschool years” (Berger, 2016, p. 413). Review pages 413- 416 of your course text, which discuss the situations or types of interactions that are likely to be sources of stress for children between the ages of 5 and 11. Then, explain how a child’s competencies or capabilities related to physical, cognitive, and social and emotional development may affect how the child responds to stressful situations or interactions.
  3. Poverty can create stressful and/or threatening conditions that affect children’s development. Consider, for example, the effects that poverty can have on children’s access to adequate nutrition. In what ways might undernutrition or malnutrition and the stress associated with both impact children’s physical, cognitive, and social and emotional development?

American History Disscusion post

Choose one of the following topics and write an essay. Some areas for you to consider including in writing your essay are provided – you are not limited to these. Post your essay as a New Thread by Thursday.

Industrialization, immigration, and urbanization

  • Consider the fact that the light bulb and the telephone were invented only three years apart. Although it took many more years for such devices to find their way into common household use, they eventually wrought major changes in a relatively brief period of time. What effects did these inventions have on the lives of those who used them? Are there contemporary analogies in your lifetime of significant changes due to inventions or technological innovations?
  • Industrialization, immigration, and urbanization all took place on an unprecedented scale during this era. What were the relationships of these processes to one another? How did each process serve to catalyze and fuel the others?

Labor, Unions, and the Captains of Industry (factory owners)

  • Describe the various attempts at labor organization in this era, from the Molly Maguires to the Knights of Labor and American Federation of Labor. How were the goals, philosophies, and tactics of these groups similar and different? How did their agendas represent the concerns and grievances of their members and of workers more generally?
  • Describe the various violent clashes between labor and management that occurred during this era. What do these events reveal about how each group had come to view the other?

The New Industrial Order

  • How did the new industrial order represent both new opportunities and new limitations for rural and working-class urban Americans?
  • How did the emergent consumer culture change what it meant to be “American” at the turn of the century?
  • What triumphs did the late nineteenth century witness in the realms of industrial growth, urbanization, and technological innovation? What challenges did these developments pose for urban dwellers, workers, and recent immigrants? How did city officials and everyday citizens respond to these challenges?

Evolution in the New Industrial Order

  • What were the effects of urbanization on the working, middle, and elite classes of American society? Conversely, how did the different social classes and their activities change the scope, character, and use of urban spaces?
  • How do you think that different classes of city dwellers would have viewed the City Beautiful movement? What potential benefits and drawbacks of this new direction in urban planning might members of each class have cited?
  • How was Darwin’s work on the evolution of species exploited by proponents of the industrial age? Why might they have latched on to this idea in particular?

History through Art

  • Historians often mine the arts for clues to the social, cultural, political, and intellectual shifts that characterized a given era. How do the many works of visual art, literature, and social philosophy that emerged from this period reflect the massive changes that were taking place?
  • How were Americans—both those who created these works and those who read or viewed them—struggling to understand the new reality through art, literature, and scholarship?

juvenile courts

If you were a state legislator, and you had the opportunity to rework the juvenile justice system, would it be to the advantage of the taxpayer and the juveniles to split the juvenile courts into two sections? For example, one section would handle status offenders, and one section would handle juvenile delinquents.

  • Address the following in 600–900 words:
    • Would it be to the advantage of the taxpayer and the juveniles to split the juvenile courts into two sections? Explain in detail why or why not.
      • How would the system decide who would go to a juvenile delinquency court and who would go to a status offender court? Explain.
      • Specifically, what would be the advantages? What would be the disadvantages?
      • Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Why or why not?
  • Remember to fully support your arguments with scholarly resources.
